Dominion of Darkness: Rephaim (2026) Review – Catholic Exorcism Terror and Dark Covenants
Dominion of Darkness: Rephaim (2026) is here to pamper Indonesian horror cinema fans who are thirsty for a fresh and different feel. While in recent years our big screens have been dominated by local mystical legends or ritualistic rituals with a certain traditional nuance, this sequel, also known as Kuasa Gelap: Kontrak Darah (The Dark Power: Blood Agreement ), dares to take the perspective of Catholic exorcism rituals, which are rarely explored in Indonesia.
Short Synopsis
The story in Dominion of Darkness: Rephaim (2026) begins with a fatal failure in a mystical ritual in a remote area in Indonesia.
In order to overcome the supernatural threat which is increasingly spreading and claiming victims, two miracle-working priests or exorcists from the Catholic church were sent directly to the scene of the incident.
Cast & Director Performance Analysis
Famous director Rizal Mantovani once again shows his mettle in creating a tense atmosphere.
From the cast, the chemistry between the two main characters in Pastor feels very solid.
Advantages and Disadvantages
Excess:
Fresh Theme and Story Ideas: Bringing up the concept of Catholic Church exorcism combined with local pesugihan myths makes the storyline feel unique amidst the onslaught of clichéd horror.
Atmosphere and Production Design: The use of religious ornamentation, Latin prayers, and dim cinematography successfully builds a consistent sense of anxiety.
Maintained Pace: The duration of 1 hour 57 minutes is utilized well without seeming long-winded, building tension slowly until it peaks in the final act.
Lack:
Use of CGI Effects: In some of the peak supernatural action scenes, the computer visual effects still feel a little less polished and somewhat detract from the sense of still horror that has been built up.
Entity Backstory Too Quickly: The explanation of the Rephaim entity's origins feels a bit rushed, so new viewers may need to re-digest the blood pact lineage.
Overall, Dominion of Darkness: Rephaim (2026) is a satisfying horror spectacle and successfully provides a new color to the Indonesian film industry.
Personal Score: 8 / 10
